The Android app & Health Connect
Install Tirzing on Android and sync with Health Connect.
Tirzing has an Android app. It shows the same Tirzing you use in the browser, wrapped so it can talk to Health Connect, Android’s shared health store. That lets a smart scale, a wearable or another health app feed data straight into Tirzing, and lets what you log in Tirzing show up for your other apps.
What syncs
- Weight, blood pressure, heart rate and body fat.
- Steps and active energy (calories burned).
- Exercise workouts, with their time and calories. Sets, reps and weights don’t come across, but you can add them to the workout afterward.
- Food (calories and macros), water and sleep.
- Menstrual cycle (period flow), when you track it.
Sync runs both ways: readings from other apps come into Tirzing, and your Tirzing entries go out to Health Connect. Which types you can sync follows your plan, the same as the matching feature in the app (for example, food and water need the nutrition feature).
Only what you logged in Tirzing goes out. Anything that came in from another app, your scale or your watch stays theirs and is never sent back, so no app ever sees the same reading twice. When you edit or delete something in Tirzing, Health Connect is updated to match. Sending to Health Connect needs the latest version of the app; an older version still brings data in, but sends nothing out until you update.
Setting it up
- Install the Tirzing app on your Android phone and sign in as usual.
- On Android 14 and newer, Health Connect is built in. On older versions, install “Health Connect” from the Play Store first.
- The first time you open the app, Tirzing asks if you want to sync and takes you to the Health Connect permission screen. Choose which data types to allow, then tap Allow. Anything you leave off, such as blood glucose if you do not use a meter, is simply skipped: everything else still syncs.
After that it syncs automatically: whenever you open the app, and on a schedule in the background (roughly every few hours) even when the app is closed. Anything you log in the app, such as a meal, a glass of water or a weigh-in, is sent to Health Connect within a few seconds of saving, so your other apps see it straight away. You do not need to sync by hand, though you can any time with Sync now.
The sync page
Open Settings, then Health Connect sync at any time. It shows whether Health Connect is connected, which data types your plan syncs, and a log of recent syncs. From there you can:
- Enable Health Connect sync (or Manage permissions) to open the Health Connect permission screen.
- Sync now to bring in new data from your other apps straight away, instead of waiting for the automatic sync.
- Check latest records to see the newest reading Health Connect currently holds for each data type. If a type says “no data”, the app that should provide it (your scale, watch or health app) is not sharing that type to Health Connect yet, so fix the sharing there.
Getting steps from a watch? If you use Samsung Health (or Fitbit, Google Fit, and similar), turn on that app’s own Health Connect sharing for the data you want (for example Steps), then allow the same type in Tirzing. Your watch steps then flow: your app, into Health Connect, into Tirzing.
Your displayed weigh-ins never change. A number you see in Tirzing is always exactly what was logged. Health Connect only ever adds readings you don’t already have; it does not overwrite a day you already recorded.
Notifications
The Android app delivers your reminders (shot due, weekly report ready, and inactivity nudges) as native phone notifications, in addition to email. The first time you open the app it asks permission to send notifications. You control which reminders you get, by email and push, under Settings, then Notifications. Tapping a notification opens the relevant screen in the app.
Working offline
The app needs an internet connection, because it loads your live Tirzing account. If you open it with no connection, it shows a friendly offline screen with a Retry button, and it reconnects on its own as soon as you’re back online. If a page ever looks stuck, tap Retry.
Fixing duplicated data
Earlier versions of the Android app could copy your data into Health Connect over and over. If another app then copied those copies back, food could come into Tirzing many times, and a single day could show far more calories than you ate. The latest app no longer does this, and it cleans up what was left behind on its own:
- Your Tirzing food diary is cleaned of repeated copies. The original of each stays, and nothing you logged yourself is ever removed.
- Everything Tirzing wrote to Health Connect is replaced with one clean copy. Only data Tirzing wrote is touched: your scale, watch and other apps are left alone.
All you need to do is update the app and open it. The clean-up happens during that first sync.
The one thing Tirzing cannot clean up is copies another app made, because only that app may delete its own data. To find them, open Settings, then Health Connect sync, and tap Check other apps. It lists which app has food repeated, and on which days, so you can delete those repeats in that app’s own food diary.
Tirzing remembers every copy it has cleaned up and never brings one back, even while it is still sitting in Health Connect. Be careful with deleting all of an app’s data in Health Connect’s own settings: that removes its real entries along with the copies.
Will syncing create duplicate entries?
Not with the latest version of the app. Tirzing skips anything it has already stored, never sends back what came in from another app, and recognises everything it has already written to Health Connect, so you can sync as often as you like. Earlier versions could create duplicates; updating the app cleans them up (see Fixing duplicated data above).
My phone and my watch both count steps. Are they added together?
Not with the latest version of the app. Tirzing uses the same daily total Health Connect itself shows, which counts a walk your phone and watch both recorded only once. Active calories work the same way. When the two disagree, Health Connect goes with the source at the top of its list: in Health Connect, open Steps, then Data sources and priority, to choose which one comes first. Earlier versions added the two together. After you update the app, the last three months correct themselves on the next sync.
A walk shows up twice on my Exercise page. Why?
Your phone and your watch both recorded it, and each app shared its own copy with Health Connect, often one called “Walk” and one called “Workout”. Tirzing now treats two synced workouts at the same time as one workout and keeps one, with its real name when either copy has one, so its minutes and calories count once. Walks already doubled have been merged too. A workout you logged in Tirzing yourself is never merged away.
How much heart rate comes in from my watch?
One reading an hour: that hour’s average, brought in once the hour is over. A watch measures every few seconds, which would bury the readings that matter. Your day’s low, average and high are worked out from those hourly readings, so a brief peak during exercise shows as part of its hour. An hour that already has a reading you added yourself keeps yours. Readings from the last three months come in on the next sync after you update the app.
If I edit or delete a food in my other app, does Tirzing keep up?
Yes. Food that comes in from Health Connect (for example from MyFitnessPal) is matched to its source record, so editing a meal there updates the same entry in Tirzing instead of adding a second one, and deleting it there removes it here too.
I deleted a synced reading in Tirzing. Will it come back?
No. When you delete something that arrived from Health Connect (a weigh-in, a blood-pressure, heart-rate or glucose reading, or a food) Tirzing remembers your decision and will not re-import that exact reading on the next sync. If you want it back, log it again or re-add it in the source app.
I don’t use an Android phone. Do I need this?
No. The app is optional. Everything works in your normal web browser, and Health Connect is an Android-only feature. On iPhone you can add Tirzing to your Home Screen as a web app instead.
Can I turn Health Connect sync off?
Yes. Open Health Connect on your phone and remove Tirzing’s access, or revoke individual data types there. Tirzing keeps working; it just stops exchanging data.
