Exercise & activity

Log activity, steps and calories-out, and see your energy balance.

The exercise tracker records what you do, estimates the calories you burn, and shows your energy balance next to your nutrition: useful for protecting muscle while you lose fat.

Logging activity & steps

  1. Open Exercise in the sidebar.
  2. Use Log activity for a walk, class or session. Pick one from the list, or choose custom activity and name your own.
  3. Enter your minutes. We estimate the calories burned from the intensity, your minutes and your current weight.
  4. Use Steps to record your daily step count.
  5. Browse Ideas if you want suggestions for what to do.

Using your own calorie figure

Our number is a MET-based estimate, and your watch or treadmill will not always agree with it. Every activity form has a Calories burned box: leave it blank to take our estimate (the box shows it as you type your minutes), or enter your tracker's figure and we store exactly that. Hand-entered figures are marked yours in the activity list and are never quietly re-estimated. That matters most for a custom activity we have no intensity rating for: type the calories and the entry is as good as any from the catalog.

Fixing a logged activity

Nothing is write-once. Open the workout an activity belongs to (from Recent workouts on the Exercise page, or the Workouts list) and use Edit next to it to change the name, minutes, distance or calories, or the × to remove it. The workout total and your energy balance for that day are recalculated as soon as you save. Quick-logged activities live in a workout of their own, so they are edited the same way.

Your own exercises

Add custom activities and strength movements under Settings → My exercises (the catalog), so the things you actually do are always available to log.

To rename one of yours or change its details, use Edit next to it on that page. Everything you already logged with it moves to the new name, so your history and strength progress stay together (a logged activity you renamed yourself keeps the name you gave it).

Settings that affect the numbers

  • Activity factor: your baseline activity level, used for calorie-out estimates.
  • Rest-timer default and auto-progression rules: for workouts (see Workouts & programs).
  • Whether exercise appears on your dashboard.

Find these under Settings → Exercise.

Calorie-out figures are estimates: treat them as a consistent week-to-week signal, not an exact count.
